Event Background >>
South Africa depends on coal-based electricity more than any other country in the world. Faced up with worse-off grid, disturbing blackout as well as the climate change concerns, South Africa began to turn to the environmentally-friendly electricity generation, among which CSP technologies have several advantages over others due to its heat storage to meet evening demand and ability to stabilize the grid. In South Africa, we can see not only good DNI map for large deployment of CSP but also favorable policies and technology solutions that give great driving force to its development.

In its initial electricity ambitious, South Africa first explored the option of renewable energy feed-in tariffs (REFITs) with a fixed price for CSP---26 cents per kilowatt-hour for concentrated solar (Troughs, with 6 hours' storage), but with more policy and regulatory uncertainties emerging, the Department of Energy has announced a competitive bidding process ---RE-IPPP program ( Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement), through which 3 rounds of CSP projects have been launched...
