Asia’s Blockchain startups may gain share in the global market after fintech funding surged to $10.5 billion in the first nine months of 2016, while China’s comprised over 90% of the region’s total. Financial-service and internet firms may join venture capitalists in backing blockchain and related projects such as payments and cybersecurity.

Blockchain startups to multiply on banking’s push in Asian hubs

The number of blockchain startups in Asia may surge in 2016-17 starting from a small base in June. Clustering may occur in leading financial hubs as regional banks push for the technology’s applications. R3, a blockchain developer, just launched an Asia-based incubator dubbed the Blockchain Center of Excellence, with support from banks including JPMorgan, HSBC and Mitsubishi UFJ. For now, these startups are spread out in Asia, with only 9.6% of them concentrated in five countries, according to Outlier Ventures.
