In Thailand, PromptPay is part of the larger national e-payment plan, a digital system that the government hopes will make Thais use less cash payment, boosting tax collection efficiency and lowering fees. 28.3 million people have registered after registration kicked off in July last year.

Siritida said that it was part of the plan to turn Thailand's into a less-cash payment society. "What we're aiming for initially is to increase the efficiency in transferring money. When it's fast, convenient and cheaper, people will likely switch to using PromptPay."

Bank of Thailand (BoT), Thailand’s central bank plans to put FinTech regulations in place for “consumer protection”. In mid-2016, it was indicated that FinTech startups in Thailand will be asked to register with BoT, as part of establishing a regulatory framework.
