A pilot project issued by Russian government called “traffic light” caused quite a reaction among the food processors. The new food labelling system “traffic light” propose instruct food manufacturers to mark packaging with 'traffic lights' symbols indicating the levels of salt, sugar, trans fats and fatty acid levels in red, yellow and green colours voluntarily. The initiative is aimed at improving the quality and life expectancy of the population, as 63% of deaths in Russia are associated with diseases developing from improper diet. Up to now, many food processors have responded with it, local and global leading enterprises like Danone, PepsiCo and X5 Retail Group all joined the project on voluntary food labeling under the traffic light system. Earlier, the company "Unilever Rus" (the subsidiary of Unilever group) have applied this system to three brands of ice cream – Ekzo, Carte D'Or and Max.
