Ericsson, a provider of technology and services to telecom operators, has recently announced IoT Accelerator Marketplace, a brand-new capability on the existing Ericsson IoT Accelerator platform. This new Ericsson IoT Accelerator capability allows developers to leverage from a single platform, global cellular connectivity APIs from a variety of service providers. Access to the Ericsson IoT Accelerator Marketplace is free for application developers, and once they build a suitable application, they can apply to become an Ecosystem partner. The company is currently focusing on 3GPP/cellular technology-driven solutions specifically designed for smart cities, transport and logistics, and smart manufacturing. The company says that it will put extra effort into partners who are building apps with a focus on these areas. Ericsson has also made a number of investments into 5G networks to support the IoT. Networks built on 5G technology can send data over long distances with nearly no lag, as well as handle large volumes of data, connecting as many as 1 million devices in a single sq. kilometer. These capabilities will be essential for delivering content such as virtual reality, as well as for self-driving cars and remotely controlled robots. China's Huawei Technologies envisions 5G technology used in connected vehicles and drones for logistics and other purposes. China Mobile has signed deals with Swedish wireless equipment maker Ericsson and Finnish peer Nokia to develop 5G-enabled smart factories.
