The automotive sector may become unrecognizable in time, driven by Industry 4.0 trends including the adoption of electric vehicles, with all the attendant disruption this will have on engine production and spare parts logistics. Therefore, it has been notable that several manufacturers, especially in Germany, are becoming more vocal about logistics, in particular the technology they are using.
Automaker BMW is working on achieving a fully digitalized factory and on a more dynamic, data analytics-driven supply chain segmentation for inbound parts. By adopting these advanced technology, such as Augmented Reality (AR), BMW Group supports logistics staff to ensure the right place is selected, sorted and/or positioned by using its in-house developed ‘data goggles’.
Besides, BMW Group also launched its initial fleet of 10 self-driving ‘Smart Transport Robots’ (STR) in everyday operation. These self-driving transport robots do not need floor-mounted induction loops for navigation, but moves freely through the logistics hall and is able to transport containers weighing up to 500 kilograms.
