2019 is an unusual year for the retail industry in China: Suning acquired Carrefour, Takashimaya, Japan’s old department store, announced its withdrawal from the Chinese market. On the other hand, ALDI, the international retail giant, entered China and opened a physical store in Shanghai. Costco, America's largest member-owned warehouse chain, is expected to open its first mainland store in Shanghai in August. Retail has its successes and its failures and its lessons.
