Let’s take an overview about the nuclear industry status quo in Africa:

Kenya

2017.3.23 China General Nuclear (CGN) and the Kenya Nuclear Electricity Board (KNEB) have extended their cooperation in the development of nuclear energy in the African country with the signing of two new agreements.

Egypt

2017.6.12 The government has finished negotiations with Russia on the contracts for depleted fuel depots, operation, maintenance, and technical support for the Dabaa nuclear plant. The contracts will be sent to President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi next week to determine the date of signing the contracts.

2017.05.19 The Egyptian Parliament’s Energy and Environment Committee is discussing a new law that aims to regulate nuclear plants construction in Egypt. The new nuclear law consists of 19 articles, which aims at creating “the executive authority on the supervision of the construction of nuclear power station projects.”

South Africa

2017.05.16 Nuclear energy in South Africa is a highly contested issue; so much so that a court recently ruled against the government’s plans to issue a contract for the construction of eight new nuclear power stations. Minister of Energy Nkhensani Kubayi made it clear after the court ruling that, while there would be no appeal, the government remained fully committed to nuclear expansion, and was planning to initiate a new process without delay.

Jordan

2017.03.29 Jordan and Saudi Arabia have signed agreements on cooperation in uranium exploration and carrying out a feasibility study into the construction of two small modular reactors (SMRs) in Jordan.
