Welcome Message

Dear Colleagues,

It’s my greatest pleasure, on behalf of the Organizing Committee to welcome you to attend 3rd World Nuclear New Build Congress (UK) 2016, which will be held on September 12-14, London, UK.

You may know that for energy security, climate change and some reasons, around 30 countries all over the world are considering building new nuclear power plants in the coming years. Countries in Asia, Turkey-MENA, Africa, Central & Eastern Europe and UK are leading the way to build new NPPs.

UK is no doubt one of the hottest market for new build NPPs, as the government aims to have 16 GWe (£50 billion) of new nuclear capacity on line by 2030. As the plan, EDF Energy aims to develop 6.4GWe at Hinkley Point C, Sizewell C and Bradwell B, Horizon Nuclear Power targets for 6 GWe at Wylfa and Oldbury, and NuGen goes for 3.6 GWe at Sellafield. Currently, all 3 sites are moving on with huge opportunities and contributing to global nuclear new build markets:

- Hinkley Pinnt C will goes first and have announced all the main contracts, although it is facing financing challenges (some talks raised about EDF to sell all of its share to Chinese investors); EDF once again delays its final investment decision in the Hinkley Point plant while most of suppliers are optimistic about the project, and Tire-2 engineering contract is going to start bidding very soon.

- Wylfa Newydd went further steps forward for the Engineering, Procurement, Construction (EPC) as Horizon Nuclear Power is leading a Tier-1 joint venture. Meanwhile, Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy (a subsidiary of Hitachi) has started to execute a Front End Engineering Design contract for some three years.

- Sellafield-Moorside is also progressing well. NuGen officially signed a contract with the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority for the Moorside site next to Sellafield in July 2015. Some site studies have been done and a final Investment Decision on the project will be made during 2018.

- Besides the big size reactors, the government is also determined to position the UK as a global leader in SMRs. And one of the world’s first SMRs is planned to be built in UK in the 2020s. £500 million fund has already been allocated to the DECC to promote the SMR programme in next five years.

Therefore, the congress in London, UK, will offer you a comprehensive coverage of the nuclear new build market with fresh project update and various case studies. Meanwhile, for those who are keen to find new investment opportunities or strengthen their presence in the global market, especially the UK market, this 3 days congress will provide plenty of opportunities to meet your future partners.

I am looking forward to meeting you in London!

Best regards,

Organizing Committee of 3rd World Nuclear New Build Congress (UK) 2016
