Greg Rzentkowski

Greg Rzentkowski is Director of Nuclear Installation Safety in the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Greg has a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering and a Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, and over 30 years of experience in mechanical and nuclear engineering which covers the following areas.
Regulatory Oversight: From 2008 to 2015, Greg was the Director General of the Directorate of Power Reactor Regulation for the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. He was responsible for development and implementation of a regulatory framework that provides assurance that Nuclear Power Plants in Canada are operated in a safe manner. He also chaired the CNSC Fukushima Task Force which developed Canada’s action plan for implementing changes in the wake of lessons learned from the Fukushima-Daiichi accident.
Safety Assessments: From 1996 to 2008, Greg managed a number of regulatory and technical programs, including reactor safety analysis and design assessment for the Atomic Energy Control Board, now the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. He was also responsible for development and implementation of a regulatory framework for licensing of new Nuclear Power Plants in Canada.
Operational Safety: From 1990 to 1996, Greg worked for Ontario Hydro, the largest utility in Canada, as a Senior Research Engineer in the area of reactor safety with particular emphasis on plant systems and equipment dynamics.
Research and Development: From 1985 to 1990, Greg conducted research studies at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada in the area of flow-induced vibration in support of offshore oil exploration and nuclear industry.
University Lecturing: Greg has also served as Adjunct Professor at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada where he contributes to the teaching of graduate students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
