Based in Johannesburg, Dr Steven C. Y. Kuo provides political, operational and security risk analysis on Southern Africa for Control Risks. Steven contributes to subscription services Country Risk Forecast (CRF) and PRIME, and also works on customised consulting projects.
Steven’s recent consulting engagements include:

  • An assessment of operational, regulatory and security threats in Namibia for a leading International mining company.
  • An assessment of operational, regulatory and security threats in South Africa for a leading international law firm.
  • An analysis of security threats for a German investor preparing to establish local office in Johannesburg. 
  • Before joining Control Risks, Steven was a Lecturer at the School of International Relations and Public Affairs, Shanghai International Studies University where he remains a non-resident Research Fellow. His research focused on African security and the impact of the rise of China. He has published peer-reviewed articles, policy papers and commentaries on Chinese peace and security operations in sub-Saharan Africa and has conducted fieldwork on Chinese operations in Liberia, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Angola. 
    He has been invited to speak on China-Africa security issues in Sweden, Norway, Ethiopia, the UK, South Africa, Australia and China.
    Steven holds a PhD from the School of International Relations, University of St Andrews, UK. He is a native speaker of Chinese Mandarin.
