Will Tanzania’s $30B LNG Export Project Deal in 2018?

The potential of Tanzania’s 53.2 trillion cubic feet of recoverable natural gas resources has brought “intense competition” among global energy players. Tanzania’s economy has borne the brunt of slow-moving global economic growth and low commodity prices and its government is pushing for the development of the country’s unexploited offshore gas reserves.

Tanzania was hoping to reach an agreement with international oil companies in 2018. Shell, ExxonMobilStatoil and Ophir Energy are among the companies seeking to push forward the $30bn project which drafted last year based on part of estimated total recoverable gas reserves of around 57 trillion cubic feet—much of these in or near the Rovuma Basin. They would be fed to a proposed onshore LNG facility at Lindi, in the south of the country.

We must beat Mozambique to secure markets in Japan and South Korea,” said one of the ministry officer. If Mozambique brings its LNG exports online faster than Tanzania, the export terminal planned to be built in Tanzania’s Lindi region could be worthless, according to the minister.
