Dear Colleague, Have you heard that Bulgaria and Iran have a talk to explore the possibility of Iran buying Russian-made reactor equipment produced for the abandoned Belene nuclear project? For the termination of the Belene NPP construction project, International Court of Arbitration (ICA) of the International Chamber of Commerce ordered Bulgaria’s state-owned National Electric Company to pay €620m in compensation to Atomstroyexport (Russia’s nuclear equipment manufacturer), Bulgaria will acquire the already manufactured nuclear reactor equipment. Now Iran has potentially used the equipment for its Bushehr-2 (Russian-procured VVER project. According to Mr Borisov(Bulgarian prime minister), reviving the Belene project may be an option if no funding is set aside in the country’s updated budget plans for paying ASE(Atomstroyexport)’s compensation claim. If Bulgaria sells the nuclear reactor to Iran, is there possible to revive Benele project?
