Dear colleague,
A serious fire broke out on an OSV, ultra-deepwater MV Vestfonn, owned by Baker Hughes when it was working for ONGC about 200 km west of Mumbai on Sunday afternoon. 28 crew members were evacuated, with no injuries or pollution reported.
In addition to potential fire and explosion, there are hazards on account of inherent risks associated with the high-technical deepwater industry in India. This is in accord with some feedback of O & G services companies from our previous interview that their challenges in India are as follows:
♦ Huge gap between international and local standard
♦ Lack of safety compliance during the operation
Obviously, quality and safety issues should be under one umbrella dedicating to enhancing the safety in this high-technical industry.
 Oil Industry Safety Directorate (OISD), analyzing incidents happening to the oil & gas industry and formulate action plan, was constituted in India in 1986. With headed by their Executive Director, OISD gets its directions and guidance from the Safety Council, aiming at enhancing the safety in the oil & gas industry in India.
