It’s my greatest pleasure, on behalf of the Organizing Committee, to welcome you to attend the World Nuclear Decommissioning & Waste Management Congress (Europe) 2016, which will be held on September 12-14, in London, UK.
Around the world, nuclear clean-up is becoming a major growth industry, with over 400 reactors being decommissioned or awaiting decommissioning. More than 200 nuclear power stations across the world are expected to be closed by 2030, almost half of the number that are currently in operation.
There are around 90 reactors are currently in their shutdown stage in the EU. Europe expects to decommission almost 150 of its nuclear power plants by 2030, which accounts for nearly 69% of the total global number of expected nuclear power reactor closures by 2030, the largest amount for any region. Experts predict that the commercial market for decommissioning in Europe could, barring any changes, be as high as $81.5bn USD.
Currently, more than 75% of the total number of reactors in shutdown state in the EU are in the UK, France and Germany. The commercial market for decommissioning in the UK, France and Germany are huge. Even though a lot of progresses have been achieved, a lot more challenges are still awaiting for solutions.
The management of nuclear wastes from operation and decommissioning stages remains as a great challenge for the whole world. Endeavors have been made around the world with a lot of achievements, while the management of intermediate and high level wastes are still requiring for an effective solution.
The World Nuclear Decommissioning & Waste Management Congress (Europe) 2016 is the only nuclear decommissioning and waste management event covering the whole world markets across Europe, Americas, Asia, and Africa, and focuses on Europe with special attention to the UK, France and Germany.
